How Do Water Heaters Work?
Water heaters are a major appliance in the household, responsible for heating all of the cool or cold incoming water. They are comprised basically of a large, upright cylindrical tank that may hold up to 40 gallons of water or more. The tank has a heating device located under the tank base and it is controlled by a thermostat. Traditional water heaters can use gas or electricity to heat the water. A gas-operated water heater has a pilot light and heats coil-like pipes with direct flame. The electric version uses heating elements to heat the water. Simply turning on the hot water side of a faucet pulls water from the outgoing hot water line from the tank.
How Can Water Heaters Malfunction?
Water heaters can stop delivering hot water or deliver water that is warm. This is the most common complaint. An aged water heater tank might build up enough calcium, rust, and hard sediments inside that it takes forever to reach the correct hot temperature, or the channels/pipes have clogged completely. A tripped circuit breaker or short in the fuse panel will disallow power to the unit, and this is typical with gas or electric water heaters.
Leaks are another common problem with water heaters. Old water heaters or units that have corroded pipes and joints may leak water in the area where they are located. A clogged vent may also cause a leak in a weak pipe or small crack in the plumbing. Excessively hot water may indicate the pressure relief valve is not opening and closing at the proper time. Foul odors, rusty or muddy colored water are all signs that the pipes or tank may be contaminated with debris, rust, or even bacteria. Banging or thumping noises are related to the pressure release function or unsecured plumbing pipes/lines that are loose or vibrating within a wall.
